Project
The proposal by the Navarrese architect Rafael Moneo was selected due to six reasons, mainly:
1.-Because of considering the lot and the Urumea River mouth as a geographical feature that must be enhanced and not null by the building erected in it.
2.-Because of the rotundity and expressiveness that must characterise a public building like the Kursaal.
3.- Because of the clearly different image from the buildings surrounding it, without coming into conflict with them in volume or height, being outstanding in its setting, but not imposing.
4.- Because of the correct disposition of the two prisms housing the halls, being each of them orientated towards the most significant geographical feature of the scenery made of the Zurriola inlet, the sea and Mount Urgull, in the case of the main auditorium; and the sea and Mount Ulia, in the case of the minor one.
5.- Because of the priority given to the façade to the sea, and the opportunity to be observed from a distance, taking the maximum advantage of the lot’s possibilities; an exceptional place for a mainly urban building, due to its location and use.
6.- And, finally, because it offers a solution adapted to the basic programme and because it solves, in a clear and appropriate way, the functional organisation of the different suggested uses, freeing an important part of the lot, allocated to a public pedestrian space.
