In its scandalous and revolutionary times, this opera of Mozart went far beyond the conventions of the buffo genre. Lorenzo Da Ponte extracted from the original comedy of Beaumarchais a rich and complicated libretto, ridiculing the Old Regime in a story where the law of desire is in command.
