For more than six decades, the Beach Boys have been a key piece of popular music, their songs have come to represent the Californian way of life, providing a passport into love, youthful effervescence and surfing culture. Their bright harmonies, along with their sophisticated and innovative musical arrangements, bore simple, positive messages, creating hymns that reflect an idyllic world that is all summer, beaches, surfing and the joy and innocence of youth. Founded in Hawthorne, California, in 1961, the Beach Boys were, originally, the three Wilson brothers, all teenagers at the time: Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love and their school friend, Al Jardine. In July 1962, the band brought out its first album, Surfin’ Safari, and that was the beginning of one of the most commercially successful bands of all time.
Having sold, to date, more than 100 million records all over the world, with 33 Gold and Platinum records under their belt, and widely acclaimed by critics, the Beach Boys have had more than 80 songs in the hit lists all over the world, 36 of them in the American Top 40. Many, many musicians have acknowledged their influence and the influence of their record Pet Sounds (1966), which Rolling Stone Magazine didn’t stop short of calling the second best record of all time. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and having won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, The Beach Boys are an American institution and continue to enjoy nothing short of iconic status the world over.
The Beach Boys have sold over 100 million records worldwide and have received over 33 RIAA Gold and Platinum Certificates. They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2001 Grammys.
Their list of hits is endless, with songs that have become eternal hymns of Californian youth: Surfin’ USA, Surfer Girl, Fun, Fun, Fun, I Get Around, California Girls, Help Me Rhonda, Barbara Ann, Good Vibrations, Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Rock and Roll Music, Kokomo…
At present, the Beach Boys are led by their lead singer and celebrated song writer, Mike Love, who, along with Bruce Johnston, who joined the group in 1965, musical director Brian Eichenberger, Christian Love, Tim Bonhomme, Jon Bolton, Keith Hubacher, Randy Leago and John Wedemeyer, continues to carry the legacy of this legendary band.
