Basada en la obra teatral de Lope de Vega, la acción tiene lugar en el siglo XV en el pueblo español de Fuente Obejuna, y gira en torno a la lucha solidaria de un pueblo contra la tirania de un cacique (Fernán Gómez de Guzmán, Comendador Mayor de la Orden de Calatrava), cuando éste abusa de Laurencia (prometida de Frondoso) en un acto de brutal feudalismo del Comendador
