The Kursaal has hosted the 14th International Symposium of the GEICAM Breast Cancer Research Group. More than 400 specialists have gathered at the conference centre after two years of pandemic. The latest advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of the disease were analysed at this international symposium, the leading scientific event on this tumour.
At the presentation of the meeting, Dr. Ander Urruticoechea, vice-president of GEICAM, scientific coordinator of the Symposium and medical oncologist at the Gipuzkoa Cancer Management Unit (OSI Donostialdea) explained that between 1,600 and 1,800 people in the Basque Country are diagnosed with this disease every year. Thanks to research, the mortality rate associated with this tumour decreases by approximately 1% each year, with an average survival rate of over 80% five years after diagnosis.
For her part, Dr. Isabel Álvarez López, member of the GEICAM Board of Directors and medical oncologist at the Gipuzkoa Cancer Management Unit, highlighted the advances in breast cancer when the disease is localised and when it is advanced.
